Chat Canvas

Chat Canvas lets you create structured, visually engaging responses that your chatbot can display during a conversation.

A canvas is used through a Workflow. When a user’s question matches the information or use case configured for a canvas, the chatbot can render the canvas as part of its response.

This allows information to be presented using a designed layout instead of relying only on plain text.

Chat Canvas is designed to work in a Workflow with an Agent Node. A canvas must be deployed before it can be selected and used in a Workflow.

Create a Canvas

To create a new canvas:

  1. Open Chat Canvas from the sidebar.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Select a canvas template.
  4. Click Create.

Available templates

TemplateDescription
Blank CanvasA simple starting layout with a heading and supporting description. Use it when you want to build a custom canvas from scratch.
Image BannerA visual banner with an image, featured label, heading, description, location or category information, and an action button. Use it for visually rich promotional or informational responses.
Support CardA support-focused card with an illustration, title, description, additional information, and a contact action. Use it for help, support, or account-related responses.
Product CarouselA carousel for displaying multiple products with images, categories, availability, ratings, prices, and action buttons. Use it for product recommendations or shopping-related responses.

After you create the canvas, you are taken directly to the Canvas Editor, where you can configure and test it.

Configure Your Canvas

The Canvas Editor is where you build and test the response that users will see in the chatbot.

The editor provides three ways to work with your canvas:

  • Preview — View the current canvas.
  • Edit — Modify the canvas configuration using JSON.
  • AI Assistant — Describe changes in natural language and let the assistant update the canvas.

You can switch between these modes while working on the same canvas.

Rename a Canvas

You can rename a canvas from the editor.

  1. Click the Edit icon next to the canvas name.
  2. The current name appears in an editable field.
  3. Enter the new name.
  4. Click Check to confirm the change.
  5. Click Cross to cancel the change.

Preview Your Canvas

Use Preview to see how the canvas will appear to users.

Preview allows you to review the visual result while configuring your canvas.

Use it to verify that the content, layout, and overall presentation look as expected before publishing.

Edit the Canvas with JSON

Select Edit to open the JSON editor.

The editor displays the canvas preview alongside the JSON configuration, allowing you to make changes while seeing the result.

Use this option when you want direct control over the canvas configuration.

After making changes, review the preview and click Save to keep your changes.

Update the Canvas with AI Assistant

The AI Assistant lets you modify the canvas using natural-language instructions.

When you select AI Assistant, the editing panel changes to a chat interface. You can describe the changes you want to make, and the assistant updates the canvas based on your instructions.

For example:

Change the heading and update the supporting description.

You can continue sending instructions and review the resulting canvas in the preview.

AI Assistant credits

Each message sent to the AI Assistant uses 60 credits.

Tip: Review the canvas after each AI Assistant change and save the version when you are satisfied with the result.

Save Your Changes

Canvas changes are not saved automatically.

After making changes, click Save to save the current Draft.

If you leave the editor without saving, your latest changes will not be retained.

Manage Canvas Versions

Chat Canvas uses three version states:

Draft → Published → Deployed

Each state has a different purpose.

Draft

The Draft is the working version of your canvas.

Use the Draft to:

  • Make changes
  • Test updates
  • Review the canvas
  • Prepare the next version for publishing

Only one Draft exists for a canvas at a time.

Published

A Published version is a saved version that has been published from the Draft.

Published versions cannot be edited directly.

If you need to make changes after publishing, make those changes in the Draft and publish the updated version.

A canvas can have multiple Published versions.

Deployed

A Deployed version is the version currently available for use in a Workflow.

Only one version can be deployed at a time.

Once deployed, the canvas becomes available for selection in a Workflow Agent node.

Publish and Deploy a Canvas

When your Draft is ready, use Publish to create a Published version.

You can choose whether to deploy the version immediately.

Publish without deploying

Leave Deploy to production unchecked and click Publish.

The Draft becomes a Published version but is not deployed.

Publish and deploy

Select Deploy to production and click Publish.

The version is published and deployed to production in the same action.

The deployed version can then be used in a Workflow.

Deploy an existing Published version

If you are viewing a Published version, the available action changes to Deploy.

Select Deploy to make that Published version the active deployed version.

Manage a Canvas

Canvas management actions are available from the More menu.

You can:

  • Duplicate a canvas
  • Share a canvas
  • Delete a canvas

Duplicate a Canvas

Use Duplicate to create a new canvas with the same configuration as an existing canvas.

The duplicated canvas is created as a separate canvas, allowing you to modify it without affecting the original canvas.

This is useful when you want to reuse an existing canvas as a starting point for a new one.

Share a Canvas

You can share a canvas with other team members and assign an access role.

To share a canvas:

  1. Open the More menu.
  2. Select Share.
  3. Select the team member.
  4. Choose Viewer or Editor.
  5. Click Share.

The team member receives access based on the selected role.

Delete a Canvas

You can delete a canvas from the More menu.

If the canvas is currently used by one or more Workflows, the system displays the Workflows that use the canvas before deletion.

Review these dependencies before proceeding with the deletion.

Access Roles

Access to a shared canvas is controlled by the assigned role.

RolePermissions
OwnerFull access, including settings, renaming, sharing, data changes, and deletion.
EditorCan test, share, add/retrain/configure data, and change auto-crawl. Cannot delete, rename, or access settings. Can share the canvas but cannot change the access level of users who already have access.
ViewerCan view data and test the canvas.

Use a Canvas in a Workflow

A canvas becomes available for use in a Workflow after it has been deployed.

To add a deployed canvas to a Workflow:

  1. Open the required Workflow.
  2. Open the Agent node.
  3. Go to the System Prompt.
  4. Type /.
  5. Select the deployed Chat Canvas.
  6. Configure the rest of your Workflow as required.

Once configured, the Workflow can use the canvas when responding to users.

When a user’s question matches the information or use case for the canvas, the chatbot can render the canvas in the conversation.

This allows users to receive information through a structured visual response rather than only a text message.
